Step-by-Step Instructions

How to Wash Your Doona — The Right Way

If you're doing it yourself, follow these six steps for a thorough clean without damaging your doona fill or fabric.

1. Shake Out & Inspect

Give your doona a vigorous shake outdoors to loosen dust, redistribute the fill, and check for loose seams or damage. Read the care label — it tells you the fill type (feather, wool, or synthetic) and what temperatures are safe.

2. Select the Right Machine

Choose your machine based on the size chart above. The doona must tumble freely in the drum — a packed machine means poor rinsing and uneven cleaning. Our largest machine at Osborne Park is 18kg, ideal for king-size doonas.

Tip: If the doona fills more than ¾ of the drum, go up a size. For loads bigger than 18kg, our Pinjarra location has 28kg industrial machines.

3. Spot Treat Stains

Apply stain treatment spray to any soiled or discoloured patches and let it sit for 3–5 minutes before loading. Don't scrub — this can damage the fill clusters inside the baffle pockets. Stain treatment is available in-store ($5).

4. Add the Right Detergent

Detergent choice matters — the wrong one permanently strips natural oils from feathers or felts wool fibres. Detergents are available in-store during staffed hours (Mon–Sat 9am–1pm), or bring your own anytime.

Feather or wool fill: Use a wool wash detergent — gentle, pH-neutral, low-suds.
Synthetic fill: Use an oxygen bleach detergent for proper sanitising and odour removal.

5. Select the Correct Temperature

Heat permanently damages feather clusters and can shrink wool — always cold wash these fills, no matter how dirty the doona looks.

Feather & wool doonas: Cold wash only (30°C or below).
Synthetic doonas: Warm wash (40°C) for more effective sanitising.

6. Dry Correctly — The Most Important Step

Incorrect drying is the #1 reason doonas are ruined. Damp fill mildews inside baffle pockets within days, and permanently clumped fill loses its warmth and loft.

Feather doonas: Dryer on no heat / air-only for 4–5 hours with dryer balls. Stop every 30–45 minutes to shake vigorously and break up clumps by hand.

Synthetic doonas: Low heat, 60–90 minutes. Use dryer balls and redistribute fill regularly.
